Aikido
Aikido is a Modern Japanese non-violent martial art created and developed by Morihei Ueshiba in the 20th Century (1883–1969).
Aikido focuses on peaceful resolutions, emphasizing harmony and blending with an opponent’s movement and using their energy against them rather than relying on strength.
Morihei Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art which practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from injury.
Aikido is translated as “The way of unifying life energy” or “The Way of harmonious spirit”.
The word Aikido is formed:
合 – Ai – harmony, unifying
気 – Ki – energy, spirit
道 – Do – way, path
Aikido techniques involve joint locks, throws and pins, focusing on redirecting an attacker’s force.
